Summer Sandals

Anyone that knows me knows that I am absolutely obsessed with heels. I would wear them everyday if I could. Flats are not something that I tend to buy often and flip flops are footwear’s equivalent to overalls in my opinion. But when I visited New York this past Spring, it was nice, sunny, and impossible to walk around in heels all day. So because of that, I have put together a collection of guidelines to help my fellow high-heel lovers in this high heat time.

Rule #1: Keep it simple. I think it’s safe to say that the gladiator look had run its course. Nothing is more unattractive than 80 million straps all over your feet and legs. In this case, less is more. Stick to sandals with few straps for a simple statement. It is also important not to have too many different colors on one shoe. Pick a color palate and stick to it. Opt for neutrals for more wear. If you’re on a budget, try these:

Old Navy, $25

Rule #2: Stay away from the thong. Remember the Old Navy display of $2.50 flip flops? I wanted every single pair. Now they make me cringe. We aren’t in middle school anymore, so why dress like it? Although there are some exceptions to the thong style, steer clear of plain and boring thong flip flops this summer. If you must wear thong sandals, make sure it has a back strap, like these:

DV by Dolce Vita, $69

Rule #3: Try some hardware. The metallic shine of hardware on a flat instantly brings sandals from dull to chic. Picture the ones above without the gorgeous gold detailing; it just wouldn’t have the same effect. Hardware adds class without adding to the price tag.

Rule #4: No plastic! Not only does plastic look cheap, but it also is cheap. Plastic sandals do not last near as long as leather or faux leather. Do yourself the favor of buying shoes that will be worth the money and won’t have to be replaced next season. Synthetic is one thing, but plastic cheapens the entire look.

And remember, there is always an exception to the rule out there somewhere, but for the most part, I’d say these are pretty easy guidelines.

What are your favorite sandal trends? Do you have anything to add to the list?
